Parr Instrument Company now offersTris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane, also known as
Tris, as a test substance for combustion calorimetery.
Significant differences in the rate of combustion or combustion chemistries between
the benzoic acid calibration standard and unknown samples may give rise to systematic
errors that are difficult to detect.The use of test substances help demonstrate that the
techniques and procedures used in determining heats of combustion of unknown materi-
als are reasonably free of persistent errors.
Tris is a recommended test substance for combustion calorimetery in ASTM D5865: Stan-
dardTest Method for Gross Calorific Value of Coal and Coke.
Tris can be used in place of benzoic acid as a test sample to check the accuracy and preci-
sion of your calorimeter.
